GE Energy’s Digital Energy business offers some of the best products, services used in the management of the transmission and distribution of electricity. The ~$1B T&D business is growing organically year on year and although it operates on a worldwide basis, the Asia Pacific region is a key to its success.

The Technical Application Engineering (TAE) group supports these sales activities with hardware and software demonstrations, presentations, written proposals and benchmarking exercises that apply GE’s technology to customers’ business problems.

Performance Measures:
The primary objective of this role is to increase DE Smart Substation orders to utilities in AP. Located in Vietnam; the role will focus on Vietnam but may cover the South East Asia region:
- Orders, Sales and Contribution Margin.
- # completed demonstrations / bids
- Team Satisfaction / Level of engagement
- Client satisfaction
- Pipeline Generation
- Satisfaction of contact with outside organizations, other components of GE and senior management.
- Observed behaviors consistent with GE the values.
- Initiatives that drive increased skilling of team and sales force effectiveness.

Major Challenges:
There is currently limited market penetration of GE’s Smart Substation solutions in South East Asia. Challenges will be to grow GE’s presence in the Smart Substation market and also support new and existing customers.
Product roadmap is evolving quickly as Smart Grid strategy develops. Challenge will be to keep track of latest product developments and roadmap.
Management of TAE environments and coordination with global TAE teams will be an important aspect of this role as the TAE team grows.

Technical Application Engineer, South East AsiaA GE DE Smart Substations product advocate to utilities.
Provision of technical support for the sales and commercial teams throughout Asia Pacific through product demonstrations, technical expertise and consultancy.
A key role in the Commercial team contributing to the preparation of Smart Substation proposals and supporting the sales organisation in both deal closing and new opportunity discussions with Customers.
Whilst this position initially refers to the Digital Energy Smart Substations- Be a product advocate to customers and the industry by clearly articulating and demonstrating the advantages of the DE Smart Substation products to solve business problems & show how they integrate into the “Smart Grid” to provide end-to-end solutions.
- Providing sales support in the form of technical demonstrations of Smart Substation hardware and Software to customers / channels.
- Supporting Bid / Commercial Managers across geographic regions to respond to customer requests for information.
- Reviewing Customer documents and producing technical compliance statements and proposals against defined requirements; calling upon subject matter experts to supplement his/her own knowledge.
- Working with sales to identify business growth opportunities in line with customer needs and influence product development
- Proactively creating/influencing customer demand for GE products and services by identification of customer needs/CTQ’s and influencing Customers specifications.
- Liaising with Marketing Program Managers, Business Analysts and Product Leaders to understand product roadmaps in relation to customers’ business and technical requirements.
- Developing and maintaining a knowledge base of previous bid responses and boilerplate documents.
- Identifying appropriate industry conferences / tradeshows and provide technical support / demonstrations.
- Identifying, preparing and presenting papers for conferences to raise the profile of GE’s DE Smart Substation solutions.
- Keeping abreast of customers' IT environments and product configurations to provide advice on appropriate technical environment and tools to be used.
- Configuration and maintenance of the DE demonstration environments, supporting sales in customer demonstrations
- Ensuring the quality of all work or services provided is in accordance with the GE Energy QMS.
- Using and supplementing existing bidding tools e.g. Price Book, Project Estimating sheets to prepare project costings in conjunction with bid / commercial team.
- Inputting into ongoing market analysis to complement business strategy and direction
- Developing and training existing customers distributors, system integrators and other partners to maximize their performance - Good communication skills including strong written & oral English language skills
- Understands and can confidently discuss electrical utility technologies, networks, and processes, particularly in T&D and around substation environments
- Strong knowledge base covering some of the following technologies: Protection & Control; Substation Automation; 61850 Station & Process Bus Solutions; distribution network monitoring; Substation and network design; Microgrids; Energy Storage; Synchrophasors; Wide Area Protection Schemes; Power factor solutions; Primary equipment (transformers, switchgear etc); Substation Monitoring & Diagnostics
- Knowledge of data networking utilizing Utility communication protocols and topologies
- Understands Smart Grid concepts
- Demonstrated ability to work under time and resource pressure.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with an emphasis on building strong team relationships
- Proactive, creative work style and a self-starter
- Willingness to travel within South East Asia - At least 3 years experience of utility products and services
- Experience in using configuration tools to program RTUs/Gateways/IEDs in substation environments.
- Knowledge of advanced automation algorithms such as Volt/Var, FDIR distribution applications, load shedding schemes etc.
- Understanding of relay and control applications within substation environment.
- Experience of transformer asset management models, power transformer basics and transformer gas diagnostics.
- University educated with preference for degree with Electrical Engineering bias
- GE’s Protection, Automation and/or Transformer Monitoring product experience will be an advantage
- IT skills: Unix/linux; Oracle; SQL Plus; networking
- Excellent negotiating skills
- Multi language (Asia)
